Departmental Scholarships

 

The School of Library and Information Science has a number of scholarships available. These awards range from $500 to $2000 annually:

 

National Organizations

 

  • American Library Association (ALA) - Provided as a public service by the ALA (the major professional organization for librarians in the United States). Presents information regarding over $300,000 in scholarship awards for students in library science. ALA’s scholarships include; general scholarships, scholarships for library support staff, library youth services, children's librarianship, school library media specialists, and Library Automation. Minority scholarships include; Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), LSSI Minority Scholarship ($2500 each), OCLC Minority Scholarships ($3000), Spectrum Scholarship ($5000) and the Century Scholarship ($2500). Application and supporting materials are are due on March 1st. ALA also sponcers the BRASS Thompson Financial Student Travel Award would like to encourage library school student’s to apply for this year’s   award to travel to the American Libraries Association’s annual conference, which will be held in Anaheim, CA June 26-July 2, 2008.   • Beta Phi Mu - Beta Phi Mu, the national library science honor society, created this site as a public service. Five Scholarships and the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship are given for beginning library science students, library media students, continuing education and PhD students each year. Applicants do not have to be a member of Beta Phi Mu to qualify for scholarships. See website for specific requirements for each scholarship.

 

  • Special Library Association (SLA) - Provided as a public service by the Special Library Association to its members and the public at large. In an effort to increase interest in special librarianship, the SLA scholarship ($6000), the Affirmative Action Scholarship ($6,000), and the Mary Adeline Connor Professional Development Scholarship ($6000) are available each year.

 

  • Midwest Archives Conference (MAC) - Provided as a public service by the Midwest Archives Conference information regarding the Archie Motley Memorial Scholarship for Minority Students. The organization presents two scholarships worth $750 to two minority students who pursue graduate degrees in archival administration. Awards are given directly to qualified minority students regardless of their geographical origin.

 

  • Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) - This site is provided as a public service by AMIA, which desires to preserve America's moving image heritage. Qualified MLIS graduate students are invited to apply for up to six scholarships using one convennient application. The site also gives information about the Kodak Fellowship, which includes a $3000 award and a summer internship.

 

  • Medical Library Association (MLA) - Provided as a public service by the MLA. The site addresses MLIS graduate students interested in health sciences librarianship and provides information on a minority scholarship ($5000) and a general scholarship ($5000), both available each year to beginning MLIS students. Information about a doctoral fellowship is also available. Deadline for all materials is December 1st.

 

  • American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) - Provided as a public service by AALL, which assists graduate students interested in librarianship in finding information about five law library awards. Financial need is also an important factor when considering an applicant's qualifications. Each type of application has specific requirements. See website for further details.

 

  • Association for Research Libraries (ARL) - Provided as a public service by ARL. This site presents information on the Diversity Initiative whose aim is to aid in the recruitment of a multicultural workforce. The $10,000 award is given annually to minority library science students interested in reasearch libraries. The perspective winners must be enrolled in at least 6 hours of graduate coursework while enrolled in a MLIS program. The winners must also work in an ARL library for two years after graduation.

 

  • USA Funds - Provided as a public service for full time graduate students with a yearly adjusted gross family income of $35,000 or less. Qualified ethnic minorities and people with disabilities will receive half of all scholarships. The remainder of the awards will be presented to other qualified students. Thousands of these scholarships are given out each year. Full time students who are fortunate enough to win the award will receive $1,500 each year that the student is enrolled in school. Specific information regarding the 2008 application process will be provided on October 1, 2007.

 

  •  Women's National Book Assoication - The Women's National Book Association sponsors the WNBA Eastman Grant, which is available for librarians who are interested in learning about the relationship between the library and publishing professions. National Minority Organizations

 

  • Black Caucus of the ALA - Provided as a public service by the Black Caucus. Information concerning the E.J. Josey Scholarship Award is given at this site. This Scholarship is presents $2000 to two qualified African American students who are enrolled in an ALA accredited program. Applicants are required to write a 1,000 to 1,2000 word essays on the special topic chosen for that particular year. Additionally, supporting documents, such as letters of recommendation and transcripts are also required.

 

  • American Indian Library Association (AILAS) - Provided as a public service by the American Indian Library Association. Information regarding a scholarship award for American Indian/Alaskan Native students is discussed at this site. The AILAS seeks to give Native Americans aid who intend to live and work among other Native Americans. The student who wins the scholarship will be given $500 and must take six credit hours while receiving the award.

 

  • American Indian Graduate Center (AIGCS) - Provided as a public service by AIGCS. Information concerning the Accenture American Indian College Fund Scholarship is given at this site. The organization hopes to encourage teaching, social services, high technology, or business degrees, in the American Indian and Alaska Native population. Three scholarships (the Accenture Fellows ($15,000), Finalist Scholarships ($2,500), and Katrin Lamon Fund Fellowship) are awarded each year. Each award has its own requirements and application.

 

  • Asians/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) - Provided as a public service for APALA. Information concerning the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association Scholarship is available at this site. A student of Asian or Pacific descent who are accepted or enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program are qualified. The student must be classified as a full-time or part-time student and citizen of the U.S. or Canada. Upon selection for the award, the student must not only join, but also become an active member of APALA.

 

  • Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) - Provided as a public service by the CALA. Information concerning three scholarships for qualified Chinese-American students is presented on this site. The Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship, the Huang Tso-ping and Wu Yao-Scholarship awards students with $1,000, $500, and $200 respectively. To qualify for the first scholarship, the student must demonstrate community service and leadership in librarianship to the Chinese-American community. The Huang Tso-Ping and Wu Yao-Scholarship requires that the student be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's or doctoral program and be of Chinese nationality or descent.

 

  • REFORMA - Provided as a public service by REFORMA. Information concerning a scholarship that aids Spanish speakers is presented at this site. The organization recognizes the importance of the increasing Hispanic population in America’s society. It is the goal of the organization to insure that adequate library and information services will be provided for this population. The REFORMA scholarship seeks to support the needs of the Spanish-Speaking community by recruiting perspective students in the library field who are bilingual and bicultural. Several scholarships are given to students in library science who are interested in instructing Hispanics.

 

 State/Regional Organizations

 

  • Graduate Incentive Scholarship - Provided as a public service by the State Commission on Higher Education. Information concerning the Graduate Incentive Scholarship (GIS) Program is presented at this site. The GIS provides forgivable loans for minority graduate students in masters, professional, and doctoral programs in South Carolina, if they plan on working in the state after graduation. M.A. students who are selected can be forgiven for up to $7000, PhD and/or professional level students up to $15,000.

 

  • Southern Regional Education Board's (SREB) Academic Common Market - Provided as a public service for SREB. Under the Academic Common Market program a student in any of the 16 member SREB states who desire to pursue a “specialized degree” that is not offered in the state of residence, may apply to another SREB state's university and be given in state status for tuition and fee purposes.They also have a doctoral program that pays for five years of a PhD program for qualified minority student (Doctoral Scholars Program)

 

  • Southeastern Library Association (SELA) - Provided as a public service by SELA to inform the public about the Frankenthaler Memorial Fund Scholarship. The aim of the program is the development and recruitment of library leaders in the Southeastern United States. See website for further details.

 

  • Georgia Library Association (GLA) - Provided as a public service by the GLA. Information concerning two scholarships (Beard and Hubbard) are made available at this site. The Beard Scholarship ($1000) seeks graduate students who have the potential of serving as leaders in library science. The Hubbard Scholarship ($2000)serves to insure the recruitment of qualified librarians for the state of Georgia. Recipients must agree to work one year in a library related field or institution in Georgia.

 

  • West Virginia Library Association (WVLA) - Applicants must be residents of West Virginia who intend to stay in the state once they complete library school. Students must also be attending ALA accredited programs and demonstate financial need. Applicants must submit all required materials by August 15th.

 

  • Virginia Library Association (VLA) - Provided as a public service by the VLA. Information concerning three $2000 scholarships that are awarded every year are available at this site. Applicants must be residents of Virginia, admitted to a MLIS program and be members of the VLA. One scholarship is reserved for those currently employed in a Virginia library. Deadline for applications is March 1st.

 

  • Maine Library Association (MLA) - Provided as a public service by the MLA. Information concerning the Phyllis E. Ainsworth Scholarship ($2000) is available at this site. Applicants must be residents of Maine, currently working on a masters or doctorate in library science, have complete at least one class and have an average of 'B' or better. Deadline for applications is April 1st.

 

 


 

 

EBSCO ALA Conference Sponsorship provides ten $1,000 awards for actual

reimbursed expenses to help librarians attend ALA's Annual Conference.

To apply for this award, applicants be ALA members and librarians that

not supervise another professional librarian.  The award is donated by

EBSCO Subscription Services.  For more information and application
