Conference Funding
LISSA commits annual funds to assisting students in covering costs that are required to attend professional conferences. Persons interested in receiving financial assistance from LISSA for conferences should submit a request to any LISSA officer by May 1st for conferences held July 1st - Dec 31st and Dec 1st for conferences held Jan 1st – June 30th. Students are encouraged to submit applications throughout the year however; priority will be given to applications that are completely submitted before the deadline.
Authorization
Granting of funds is based on:
LISSA membership - - LISSA members given priority
Current enrollment -- Student in last semester of program given priority
Type of conference (i.e. national vs. state) -- ALA, ASIST, and SLA conferences given priority
Student’s role in conference (i.e. presenting vs. attending only) -- Presenters given priority
Previous conference funding received from LISSA -- First-time recipients given priority
Any student whose application is approved and receives funds from LISSA is expected to:
Submit receipts at end of conference confirming attendance

Insurance
Here is the site that will answer all of your questions regarding Insurance. Make sure that you print out the waiver and send it in if you are already insured because of a job or a spouse to keep from having to pay the school's price. You are not obligated to pay and use this insurance if you are already insured.
Getting an ID
This is the site to go to with any questions regarding the Carolina ID Card. If you have any questions you can use the phone number at the bottom of the main page of the site and they will be happy to answer them. You must come to the campus to get your ID card before starting classes.
Independent Studies
The purpose of an independent study is to enable a student to gain an in-depth knowledge of an area germane to the student's course of study which is not offered in a course in the School. A student may not audit sit in on a course and later receive independent study credit for the course or material covered in the course.
The need for and value of an independent study will be evaluated very carefully to determine if an independent study is, indeed, justified. Objectives for the content of each independent study will be arranged by student and the faculty member supervising the independent study. All independent studies should result in a tangible output as a basis for evaluation, e.g., a notebook, written paper, Web pages or media presentation. All independent studies are evaluated using letter grades.
Independent studies in the School of Library and Information Science require prior approval of the Dean and are subject to strict application and registration procedures. Application deadlines are published well in advance for each semester. Instruction packets, which include deadlines and specific application steps to be followed, are available in the Student Services Office. Students planning to take an independent study must meet with their advisors to complete an Independent Study Contract, obtain the necessary signatures, and return the contract to the Student Services Office before the posted deadline for the semester.
Internships
Internships are available to all MLS students. The student should have successfully completed most of their course work, including the core courses before participating in an internship. Students completing internships must have taken relevant specialized classes either before or concurrent with the internship. The internship should occur at the end, or very near the end, of the student’s course of study.
Students can take 3 or 6 credit hours of internship. Each credit hour requires 45 hours of contact work in the internship setting. Three credit hours will be awarded for a minimum of 135 hours of work and the successful completion of the internship objectives as set by the faculty, supervisors and intern at the beginning of the internship.
Internships can be completed in one of the following areas:
1) type of library or other information agency
2) clientele
3) function or service area (i.e. administration, children’s services, reference, technical services, etc.)
The site supervisor should have a graduate degree from the appropriate credited program and at least 1 year of professional experience.
Students who wish to complete an internship should:
1) Obtain a copy of the internship guidelines from the SLIS student office six months in advance of the proposed internship date.
2) Meet with their advisor to request and discuss the internship.
3) Meet with the faculty supervisor and complete the following forms: SLIS request for internship, Internship Contract and Personal Information Form.
4) Make an appointment with the proposed site supervisor after the faculty supervisor has made initial contact.
5) Meet with the site supervisor and make a list of learning goals to be approved by the faculty supervisor.
The final decision as to whether a student may request a certain internship is up to the advisor. The student will be registered for their internship credits by the SLIS student services office after they receive the completed and signed Internship Contract.
Graduate Assistantships
Assignment
Graduate Assistants are assigned to faculty members by the Student Service
Coordinator based on their resumes and the area of study they are interested in.
Schedule
Graduate Assistants are paid for a specific amount of work per week (Minimum 10 hours/Maximum 20 hours). GA’s are assigned to supervisors by the Student Services Coordinator. They may work 10 hours per week for one faculty member or their time can be split between 2 faculty members. Each semester supervisor’s evaluate their GA and a decision is made if the two wish to continue working together. A GA who does not perform his or her duties can be terminated.
GA hours are generally set by agreement between the supervisor and the GA.
GA’s are not generally expected to work during school holidays or examination periods.
Graduate students do not accrue sick leave, so work missed because of illness should be made up.
Scholarships
The School has a number of scholarships available. These awards range from $500 to $2000 annually. A list of available scholarships is available below as well as a list of current scholarship recipients.
The Student Services Manager handles all inquiries and applications for financial aid administered by the School. Scholarship application deadline is March 1 for Fall. (There are no scholarships awarded in the spring or summer.) The applicant must be fully admitted by this date in order to be considered for an award. Award recipients are chosen by the Student Services and Financial Aid Committee.
