Graduate School Fellowships

These highly competitive fellowships are "recruiting fellowships" and offered to promising applicants to the Graduate School. Nominations are made by individual graduate programs. Applicant awards must be matched by the department. The fellowships are granted for the first year, and are renewable for an additional year for Masters students and for an additional three years for doctoral students.

There are four fellowships in this category:
C. C. ROYAL FELLOWSHIP
DERA D. PARKINSON FELLOWSHIP
GEORGE M. REEVES FELLOWSHIP
RHUDE M. PATTERSON FELLOWSHIP
The first three are given to "a graduate student pursuing either a master's or doctoral degree", and carry a $500 award, the last was established "through a bequest from the late Mrs. Rhude M. Patterson for women in the humanities and social sciences" and carries an award of $1000. Nominations are made by individual graduate programs.

Graduate Incentive Scholarships
2007 Deadline: 15 March 2007
This fellowship is to aid in the financial need of African-American graduate students to attend the University of South Carolina. The primary function of this fellowship is to recruit new African-American graduate students to the University of South Carolina. Priority is given to African-American graduate students seeking degrees in academic majors with low representation. Retention of previous fellows is the secondary aspect of this award.
Note: The application procedures, application deadlines, and evaluation process for this award will be changed in the coming 2007-2008 academic year.

Summer Dissertation Fellowships
2007 Deadline: 26 March 2007
Two awards of $2500 each will be awarded to two outstanding doctorate students who have demonstrated an excellence in their doctoral studies at the University. Students whose overall academic achievements are outstanding should be considered for nomination of this award. Nominations are made by individual graduate programs.

Outstanding Dissertation Awards

Two awards of $1000 are made in each of two categories each year. The categories rotate. The categories considered for 2007 are
(1) Biological and Life Sciences
(The following list, although not all-inclusive, illustrates the field considered as Biological and Life Sciences: biology; botany; zoology; ecology; embryology; entomology; genetics; nutrition; plant pathology; plant physiology; anatomy; biochemistry; biophysics; microbiology; pathology; pharmacology; physiology; and related fields. Also included are agriculture, forestry, and related fields.)
and
(2) Humanities/Fine Arts
(The following list, although not all-inclusive, illustrates the fields considered as Humanities/Fine Arts: history; philosophy; language; linguistics; literature; archaeology; jurisprudence; the history, theory and criticism of the arts; ethics; comparative religion; and those aspects of the social sciences that employ historical or philosophical approaches.).
Nominees must have completed their doctorate between July 1 two years prior to the deadline and June 30 in the year of the deadline. Nominations are made by individual graduate programs.The categories for this award rotate in a two year cycle, such that next year's (2008) categories will be: (1) Social Sciences, and (2) Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Engineering.

Graduate School Research Assistantships Program 2007-2008
Deadline: 1 August 2007
Fifteen to twenty research assistantships of $6000 (half-time) and $12000 (full-time) to be made for the 2007-2008 AY. The intent of this program is to provide one-time funds for hiring graduate assistants, enable them to work more closely with faculty on ongoing innovative research projects (scholarly or creative endeavors), and to assist faculty who are beginning new research projects (scholarly or creative endeavors). Nominations are made by individual graduate programs.

Outstanding Thesis Awards
2007 Deadline: 28 September 2007
Two awards of $500 are made in each of two categories each year. The categories rotate. The categories considered for 2008 are (1) Life Sciences and (2) Social Sciences, Business, and Education. Nominees must have completed their master's between Fall 2005 and Summer 2007. Nominations are made by individual graduate programs. The categories for this award rotate in a two year cycle, such that next year's (2009) categories will be: (1) Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering, and (2) Humanities and Fine Arts.
