Volunteer Opportunities at Talking Books at the South Carolina State Library

Talking Books, at the South Carolina State Library, provides library services for the visually impared patrons, and they are looking for some volunteers. As they were kind enough to give us a tour of the Talking Books, we are posting volunteer information on LISSA 2.0 Here's a link to the volunteer section of the Talking Books website.  The volunteer application is also on the website.

http://www.statelibrary.sc.gov/volunteer-opportunities.html

Their recording program is where they have the greatest need for volunteers.  These volunteers will help record and produce recorded books and magazines for our handicapped patrons.  All volunteers working with the recording program receive training on how to use specialized digital recording software.

Volunteer Narrators record books and magazines about South Carolina or written by South Carolinians.  Narrators must have an acceptable reading style, have a pleasant voice and pass an audition.

Volunteer Monitors operate the recording equipment while the narrator is reading/recording and provides quality control for the recording session.

Volunteer Reviewers check for mistakes in the recorded material and make edits and corrections to the recordings.

Here are some other volunteer positions that we have available right now.

Production Assistants use professional high speed tape duplication equipment to make copies of audio books and magazines that will be added to our collections and circulated to our visually and physically handicapped patrons.

Receptionists greet visitors, answer the phone and route calls to Talking Book Services and other State Library staff.

Book Inspection volunteers check cassette books to ensure that tapes are in good condition, books are complete and all cassettes are rewound before they are mailed to patrons.

Talking Book Services is open Monday through  Friday, 8:30 am - 5:30 pm.  Almost all volunteer work is done during normal business hours.  You can set up a flexibile schedule to work as little or as often as you like.  An interview is conducted with each potential volunteer to discuss your interests, experience and time availability.  Please contact Naomi Bradey by email or phone if you're interested in volunteering. Her information is as follows:

Saint John Preschool Library Project

Below is an e-mail sent to LISSA about the Saint John Preschool Library Project. Although LISSA will officially help starting next semester, we are currently committed to other service projects so that we cannot promise to do anything until then. We did want to get the word out to anyone who, looking for a volunteer opportunity, would like to help this semester. Thanks and have a nice day, Travis

Greetings,

I am Tondaleya Jackson and I was appointed to serve as Chairman of the Saint John Preschool Library Project. I am reaching out to the USC Library and Information Science Student Association for assistance. Ms. Carolyn Delton indicated that a need such as ours is within the realm of volunteer services you provide. Additional details are below.

The Preschool has been in existence for decades. Currently there are 109 children ages 3-5 enrolled.  The school has a room which is considered a library. There are a multitude of books and other educational materials, but it lacks the order and organization of a formal library. In addition, there is currently not a system in place to allow students/parents to check out books. We are in need of assistance from your organization to address these areas.

Can you assist the committee in our efforts to bring order to the Preschool's multitude of library resources? The Parent's and the school's staff recognizes the importance of this task and want to ensure that it is done correctly. For this reason, we are actively seeking out your assistance.

The address and phone number of the Preschool is below, but please contact me directly (see below) after you have given consideration to this request. Thank you so very much for your time and any assistance you can provide.
